Discharge Before Period: What It Means

Discharge changes throughout your cycle, and what you notice before your period is often completely normal — here's what to expect.

Vaginal discharge is your body's way of keeping the vagina clean, lubricated, and healthy. The amount, colour, and texture of discharge changes throughout your menstrual cycle in response to shifting hormone levels. What you notice in the days before your period is often quite different from what you'd see mid-cycle — and knowing what's normal can save a lot of unnecessary worry.

Discharge Through Your Cycle

Days 1–5
Period

During your period

Discharge is replaced by menstrual blood. You may notice brown or dark discharge at the very start or end of your period — this is old blood leaving the uterus and is completely normal.

Days 6–12
Follicular

After period ends — dry to creamy

Just after your period ends you may have very little discharge. As estrogen rises toward ovulation, discharge begins to appear — initially thin, watery, and white or slightly cloudy.

Day ~14
Ovulation

Around ovulation — clear and stretchy

Discharge at ovulation becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy — like raw egg whites. This is your most fertile discharge and a sign that ovulation is occurring or imminent. This is the most noticeable change of the cycle.

Days 15–28
Luteal

Before your period — thick and white

After ovulation, progesterone becomes dominant and discharge becomes thicker, stickier, and often white or off-white. This is the most common type of discharge women notice "before their period" — it can feel quite heavy and sticky. It is completely normal.

Could Discharge Before a Period Be a Sign of Pregnancy?

Possibly. In early pregnancy, discharge often increases and becomes milky white or creamy. This is called leukorrhea and is caused by rising estrogen and increased blood flow to the vaginal walls. However, early pregnancy discharge looks very similar to normal luteal phase discharge — you can't tell the difference by appearance alone.

If your period is late and you're noticing more discharge than usual, take a pregnancy test. A home pregnancy test is reliable from the day of your missed period.

Implantation timing: Around 6–12 days after fertilisation, some women notice very light pink or brown spotting (implantation bleeding). This is different from normal discharge and is lighter and shorter than a period. Not all women experience it.

When Discharge Before a Period Is Not Normal

⚠ See a Doctor If Your Discharge:

Can Discharge Replace a Tampon or Pad?

No — discharge doesn't require menstrual products. If you're finding that discharge is heavy enough that you feel you need a pad, you might be confusing discharge with a very light period, or you could have bacterial vaginosis, which can cause notably increased discharge. A GP can test for this quickly.

Daily panty liners are fine if you prefer to keep underwear dry — but they don't need to be medicated or scented. Avoid perfumed products, which can disrupt vaginal pH.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does discharge look like right before your period?

In the days before your period, discharge is typically thick, white or off-white, and creamy. This is due to the drop in estrogen and rise of progesterone during the luteal phase. It may feel sticky and is usually odourless.

Is a lot of discharge before a period normal?

Yes. Many women notice more discharge in the luteal phase. This is normal and caused by hormone changes after ovulation. As long as it has no strong odour or accompanying itching, increased volume before a period is nothing to worry about.

Can discharge before a period mean pregnancy?

Possibly. In early pregnancy, discharge often becomes more abundant and milky white (leukorrhea), but this looks similar to normal luteal discharge. Take a pregnancy test if your period is late.

What colour discharge is normal before a period?

White, off-white, or very light yellow discharge is normal before a period. Brown discharge right before or at the start of a period is also common — it's old blood. Bright yellow, green, or grey discharge with a strong odour is not normal.
