Spotting before your period is due โ is it implantation or early period? Here's how to tell.
Implantation bleeding affects about 25โ30% of pregnant women. It occurs when the fertilised egg implants into the uterine lining, causing a small amount of bleeding. Because it happens around the time a period is expected, it's easy to confuse the two. But there are reliable differences.
| Feature | Implantation Bleeding | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | 6โ12 days after ovulation | 14 days after ovulation (typically) |
| Duration | 1โ3 days | 3โ7 days |
| Flow | Very light (spotting only) | Builds to moderate/heavy |
| Colour | Pink or light brown | Bright red, deepens over time |
| Clots | Never | Common in moderate-heavy flow |
| Cramping | None or very mild | Mild to significant |
| Progression | Stays light or stops | Gets heavier then lighter |
Implantation bleeding is almost always:
Implantation occurs 6โ12 days after ovulation. For a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14, implantation would happen between days 20โ26 โ roughly 4โ8 days before your expected period. This overlap with the time you'd expect your period is what causes the confusion.
If spotting appears at the exact time your period is expected (day 28 in a 28-day cycle), it's more likely the beginning of your period than implantation bleeding.
Implantation bleeding sometimes occurs alongside other early pregnancy signs:
After implantation, hCG levels rise rapidly and double every 48โ72 hours. Early response pregnancy tests can detect hCG as low as 6.5 mIU/ml and may give a positive result 10โ14 days after ovulation. Testing too early gives false negatives โ wait at least until the day your period is expected for a reliable result, or use an early response test 4โ5 days before your expected period.

Start free โImplantation bleeding is much lighter (spotting only), pink or brown (not bright red), lasts only 1โ3 days, involves no clots, and causes minimal or no cramping. A period builds to heavier flow, is bright red, lasts 3โ7 days, and includes progressive cramping.
Implantation bleeding typically occurs 6โ12 days after ovulation โ usually 4โ8 days before your expected period. It's brief (1โ3 days) and much lighter than a period.
No โ only about 25โ30% of pregnant women experience implantation bleeding. Its absence doesn't mean you're not pregnant.
No โ implantation bleeding is always light spotting. If bleeding is heavy or includes clots, it is not implantation bleeding.
